It all began in 1967, when Ralph Lauren acquired the rights to the "Polo" brand from Brooks Brothers. At that time, the Brooks Brothers was a specialist supplier for the elegant sport of polo. In 1972, after the foundation of the tie shop "Polo Fashion", Ralph Lauren expanded his product range with a new men's collection - the birth of the shirt with short sleeves in 24 different shades of colour for men, which is now celebrated as THE polo shirt all over the world. After his military service, Ralph Lauren worked as a fashion salesman for the American company Brooks Brothers. Afterwards, however, he was taken to the tie manufacturer Beau Brummell, whom he convinced to design his own tie line in 1967. He presented it in the Empire State Building and with success. Shortly afterwards he acquired the rights to Brooks Brothers, founded a tie shop and designed his first men's line, which he was allowed to sell in the famous department store Bloomingdale's only two years later. The designer made the finest flannel suits and suit shirts from high-quality sports shirt fabrics. With the ladies' line in 1971 he opened his own boutique on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Already on the next collections the well-known embroidered polo pony was found.
1972 saw the fashion breakthrough. Ralph Lauren launched the polo shirt for men in 24 colours. The classic shirt has always been made of high-quality cotton piqué and has the polo pony embroidered on the chest with 982 stitches. In the course of time, the material selection in other collections was supplemented with modern fabrics. The typical "American Sportswear" is still the most successful garment of the label today. Ralph Lauren was also able to establish himself in the ladies' world with a European interpretation of the preppy style. Materials such as tweed, check patterns, slipovers and pleated skirts are characteristic of the elite college fashion. Jackie Kennedy already appreciated this look.
Over the years, the designer has designed numerous outfits for major historical films, such as the suits for Robert Redford in the 1974 film "The Great Gatsby" or dresses for the actress Gwyneth Paltrow in "Shakespeare in Love". Over the years, Ralph Lauren has expanded his product range to include fragrances, a homewear collection and the polo bear, which has become a playful trademark as a stuffed animal. Today Kevin Carrigan is chief designer at Ralph Lauren.
