The company was founded in 1966 by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro in Vicenza, northern Italy. True to the name "Venetian Workshop", Taddei and Zengiaro's aim from the very beginning was to produce leather goods of the highest craftsmanship. Bottega Veneta developed a unique leather braiding pattern, called "Intrecciato", which is still typical for the label today and decorates the outside of many of their products. In contrast to all other brands, Bottega Veneta consistently avoided logos on its products and appropriately advertised with the slogan "When your own initials are enough". The brand's success began in the 1970s. Bottega Venetas products became a popular figurehead of the international jet set. Among the brand's customers were the First Lady of the USA, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Farah Pahlavi, the former Iranian Empress.
After difficult economic times in the 1980s and 1990s, the company was sold to the Gucci Group in 2001. The fashion division of Bottega Veneta, which had only started in 1998, was temporarily discontinued, but subsequently revived. Since then, the excellent craftsmanship of the products and the Intrecciato braiding pattern have once again been in the spotlight. Since 2006, the Italian luxury label has also been marketing its own jewellery line and in the following years has expanded its range to include furniture design and interior decoration. In 2011 and 2013 the production of women's and men's fragrances under the brand name began. To this day, Bottega Veneta's customers value the use of exquisite materials, excellent workmanship and unique product design. As in its entire company history, the company still does without distinctive labels and fast-moving trends.
