Hermès

Hermès is one of the most famous luxury brands in the world. The French family business is based in Paris and was founded by Thierry Hermès in the French capital. Thierry, who was a master saddler at the time, opened the Hermès bridle shop in 1837, but over the years - triggered by the advance of carriages and cars - the range was expanded to include suitcases, bags, silk scarves and leather goods. Since 2013 the current managing director has been the French billionaire Axel Dumas. The most famous are probably the Kelly Bag and the Birkin Bag - both handbags have now achieved worldwide cult status.

Hermès

Hermès - from saddler to world famous fashion founder

Thierry Hermès was born in Krefeld - then still French annexed territory - and completed an apprenticeship as a saddler. In 1828 he married the French woman Christine Pierrat and moved with her to a suburb of Paris, where he pursued his profession. In the 1890s, the range was expanded to include fine suitcases and leather bags, handbags were introduced in the 1920s. Due to the robust and luxurious materials, the company quickly gained a reputation throughout Europe. The logo on which a passenger steers the carriage himself ("Le Duc") was introduced in the 1950s. Later, perfume and watches were also to be added to the range.

How the cult bags became a cult

The Hermés Kelly Bag got its name, which is so well-known today, from a transformation of a men's travel bag into a ladies' bag, designed by Robert Dumas and worn in 1956 by Princess Gracia Patricia of Monaco, better known as Grace Kelly. Shown on the cover of Life magazine, the demand for the bag jumped all over the world. The bags are considered extremely prestigious and, in order to increase their value once again, are produced in limited numbers. It takes around 18-24 hours to produce a single Kelly Bag.

The name of the Hermés Birkin Bag comes from the Anglo-French actress Jane Birkin, who in turn was involved in the design of the bag, as she happened to be sitting next to Jean-Louis, then chairman of the board of Hermès, during a flight. After the bag appeared in the cult series "Sex and the City", it became one of the most sought-after fashion items in the world. But the hand-printed silk scarves with motifs are also a sought-after accessory in the fashion world.
