Escada

Escada - a German success story

Escada goes back to the Swedish model Margaretha Ley. The tailor trained at the Royal Court in Stockholm founded the company in Munich in 1976 together with her husband, the German entrepreneur Wolfgang Ley. While Margaretha took over the creative part as chief designer, Wolfgang took care of the finances and sales. By the way, the brand name Escada is derived from the name of an Irish race horse. In 1978 Escada presented its first complete fashion collection for ladies. With its colourful designs in high-quality fabrics, the fashion label quickly made a name for itself in the 1980s in the field of upmarket evening and business fashion for women. Bright colour combinations and gold buttons became the trademark of Escada fashion.

In 1986 Escada went public and in the following years achieved record growth through the worldwide expansion of its store network. The label attracted great international attention through its advertising campaigns in the 1980s and 1990s, for which supermodels such as Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Claudia Schiffer and Christy Turlington were hired. Escada's worldwide fame was also ensured by the fact that world stars like Kim Basinger, Demi Moore and Princess Diana appeared in the fashion label's creations.

An eventful history

Until the beginning of the 1990s, Escada continued its rapid international expansion, also by acquiring other fashion brands. For a while, the Munich-based label was even considered the largest women's fashion company in the world. In addition, the range was greatly expanded to include handbags, shoes, jewellery, accessories and fragrances. But the expansion proceeded too quickly and the company got into serious financial difficulties in 1992, the year of the death of the founder Margaretha Ley. In the following years, the fashion label went through a very eventful history with several restructurings, changes of ownership and new management. In the meantime, the business was concentrated on the core brand Escada as well as the second brand Escada Sport, which has a more sporty and less expensive orientation.
