Diane von Furstenberg

Diane von Furstenberg is an icon among American fashion designers. With the invention of the so-called wrap dress, she achieved a unique design coup in the mid-1970s. The wrap dress proved to be so successful and style-forming that today there is even an example on display in the world-famous Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Not many couturiers have managed this yet. For her work, Diane von Furstenberg received the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and was elected Chairperson of the American Fashion Association in 2006.

Diane von Furstenberg - an unplanned career

It was by no means foreseeable that Diane Simone Michelle von Fürstenberg, as her full name is, would one day become one of the most famous fashion designers in the world. Raised in Belgium and Switzerland, she studied Spanish in Madrid and business administration in Geneva, where she met her future husband, the Swiss fashion designer Prince Egon von Fürstenberg. After marrying in France in 1969, the couple moved to New York City and became a darling of New York's high society.

Diane von Fürstenberg was portrayed by star artists such as Andy Warhol and Helmut Newton and enjoyed New York's luxury party life to the fullest. At the same time, she began to build up her own business so as not to be dependent on her now divorced husband. She started selling colourful printed jersey dresses and in 1974 she achieved a true design world success with the design of the so-called wrap dress.

A second career

After von Furstenberg retired from the fashion business in 1985 and dedicated herself to a publishing house in Paris, she returned to New York City twelve years later to begin a second career as a fashion designer. Since then she has been one of the big names on the American fashion design scene. In the years that followed, the bustling entrepreneur also launched a cosmetics line and entered the home shopping business. Von Furstenberg still designs her exclusive women's collections today.
