His brand, named after him, still stands for high-quality knitwear made of cashmere. The designer is also praised for his sparkling embroideries. Brunello Cucinelli was born in 1953 in Castel Rigone, a small Italian village with about 400 inhabitants. Cucinelli spent his childhood and youth on his parents' farm in poor conditions. To feed the family, the father had to take a job in a nearby factory. His father's very poor working conditions and experiences of discrimination ultimately influenced the young Cucinelli: to this day, the designer always makes sure that neither people, animals nor the environment are harmed in the production of his fashion.
Cucinelli began to take an interest in fashion when he was still young. He was particularly taken with the colourful woollen jumpers designed by Luciano Benetton. So Cucinelli decided to emulate his idol Benetton and make sweaters out of cashmere. He borrowed some money and commissioned embroiderers in his home village to make various ladies' sweaters according to his ideas. These sweaters became a great success: within only three months Cucinelli sold almost 400 pieces. Today, the production of these colourful cashmere sweaters is considered the cornerstone of the Brunello Cucinelli brand.
Word quickly spread of Cucinelli's fashionable talent. In 1978, at the age of 25, the designer decided to start his own company, Brunello Cucinelli S. p. A., and the company was born. In a short period of time, the brand was able to gain enormous recognition for its impressive designs and high quality, making it famous beyond the borders of Italy. As a result, the company was able to expand its product range more and more. Today, as when the brand was founded, Cucinelli's clothing is based on designs that are both fashionable and impressive, as well as being comfortable to wear and of the highest quality. In addition, Brunello Cucinelli's clothing is known in the fashion world for being extremely durable.
In the first 15 years after the company was founded, Cucinelli focused entirely on the production of women's fashion. It was not until the 1990s that menswear was added to the brand's range.
